PHOTOJOURNALISM
Telling stories with photographs adhering to the rules and ethics of journalism. They must be true stories and in general they are told in the most fair, balanced, and unbiased way possible.

GENERAL NEWS
General news is a calendared event, something that is announced ahead of time, and has significant news value to it. Below is a General News image of a man praying outside of a mosque in Jerusalem marking the first day of the Muslim Holy month of Ramadan.

SPOT NEWS
Spot news is an unplanned event like a car accident or fire. The key to this is having a good source of information and to gathering a lot of information once on scene. Being skilled at interacting with law enforcement and emergency crews is a great help. Spot news is the opposite of General news. Below is a Spot News image of the Asiana flight that crashed at the San Francisco Airport. This was of course a completely unplanned event.

The moments after an Asiana airlines plane crashed in San Francisco, thick black smoke can be seen
rising as passengers use emergency slides. Fire crews arrive to help passengers and to douse the plane. (July 8)

ENVIRONMENTAL PORTAIT
Picture portraying people (groups and individuals), public figures, or celebrities, observed in their environment. The (somewhat) opposite of an environmental portrait is a "staged" portrait where the subject is out of their environment and everything is staged.
