A FEW BASIC TIPS ON SHOOTING SPORTS ACTION/FEATURE PHOTOGRAPHY (in no particular order)

1. Shoot in burst mode when needed.
2. Shoot in jpeg. Your camera may not have enough time to process RAW as the action happens.
3. Ideally shoot with a fast (f1.4 - 4 but not 5.6) telephoto lens (70-200, 300 or 400 if you're super lucky and have access to the big guns)
4. Do not shoot in full auto!!
5. Shoot with a fast shutter speed. Preferably do not go under 1/500 of a second (unless you deliberately want to blur the action)
6. If you are shooting semi-manual, you can try shooting with aperture priority f 2.8 or f 4 so that you can let in the maximum amount of light and let the camera decide the shutter speed.
7. Watch your ISO. Bright sunny soccer match? ISO 400. Slightly darker day ISO 800-1200.
8. For continuous panning shooting (where you are following your subject) shoot in AI servo mode.
9. If you are using a flash, check with any coaches, players etc. if this is ok. Avoid direct flash, try to bounce. (If you need continuous flash for shooting in continuous mode, you will need an external battery unit to keep up).

A FEW BASIC TIPS ON SHOOTING NATURE (in no particular order)

1. Maximize your depth of field for landscapes. Shallow depth of fields for close-ups/macro shots (focus your subject, blur the background.)
2. Use a tripod!!
3. Look for a focal point.
4. Think about your foregrounds.
5. Notice the directions of lines in your composition.
6. Shoot around golden hour (dawn/dusk)
7. Don't forget to try different compositions of the same shot.
8. For certain images with overly bright portions (i.e. sky) try using a graduated neutral-density filter.
